My wife and I have talked about grooming Hunter for the Olympics. He has a natural talent for sport. He excels at baseball, soccer and swimming – anything that he applies himself to. I am not just saying this as a proud dad, the kid has skills.
For the first week of the Olympic games we were at the cottage, without cable, so we were unable to watch the games on TV. However, equipped with an iPad and iPhone we caught up on our favourite sports thanks to the CTV Olympics app.
At first we tried to watch the games on the laptop, but for whatever reason Microsoft Silverlight wouldn’t play nice with my Mac. I remember working at CTV during the 2008 Olympic games. My manager at the time was sequestered to the Olympic team and was instrumental in their decision to use Silverlight as the platform for delivering Olympic coverage to the web. He is a smart man, but I never agreed with his decision.
The 2012 CTV Olympic iPhone app will not allow you to stream video via 3G. The iPad app, however, when teathered to the iPad, works fine. Our coverage at the cottage has never been great, but the streaming video worked fine and we were able to watch highlights and our favourite games no problem.
The app has a terrible rating on the app store. I haven’t bothered to read the reviews, but IMO I think it is great. You can watch video, check the medal count, read the news and the user interface is intuitive. If you are looking to stay up to date with the games while on the go, you could do a lot worse than the CTV Olympic app. If there is something better out there, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
